HNK Hajduk Split defeated Dinamo Zagreb 2:1 in a rain-soaked derby at Poljud to reclaim top spot in the HNL. After the match, the club's official social media account posted a succinct message: "Kiše su padale, gromovi sijevali 🔴🔵".
The match was played in extremely difficult weather conditions. Torrential rain during the second half left the pitch waterlogged with large puddles. Referee Igor Pajač consulted with representatives from both teams about the possibility of abandoning the fixture, but the game was ultimately completed. The victory came via a Scott McKenna own goal in the 23rd minute and a strike from Abdoulie Sanyang in the 59th, assisted by Michele Šego. Dinamo had taken an early lead through Dion Drena Beljo in the 21st minute.
The condition of the Poljud pitch remains a concern following the derby due to drainage issues. This raises questions ahead of Thursday's UEFA Conference League match against Ajax. Dutch media have already warned that Ajax can prepare for a match on an almost unplayable pitch in Split. Hajduk will host Ajax in the first leg of the league phase on Thursday at 18:45, with all away fan tickets sold out.
Currently, Hajduk sits first in the HNL table with 19 points from nine games, putting them one point clear of second-placed Varazdin. The next challenge is a home match against Varazdin on October 18th, a direct clash for the league lead. The derby win marks Hajduk's fourth victory in their last five matches across all competitions.
