Dutch football media have warned Ajax that they face a tough task at Poljud on Thursday, after Hajduk Split beat Dinamo Zagreb 2-1 to secure top spot in the HNL. The derby victory and a perfect home record this season are cited as the main reasons for caution.
VoetbalPrimeur directly stated that the win is a warning to Ajax. "For Ajax, that victory is a warning ahead of this coming Thursday, October 15." they highlighted. After nine rounds, Hajduk lead the table with 19 points, having won four and drawn one of their five home matches.
The Dutch outlet Voetbal International described the match as the game of the year for Croatia. "For Croatia, that is the match of the year, Hajduk against Dinamo." they wrote. The win was sealed by Abdoulie Sanyang's goal in the 59th minute and an own goal from Scott McKenna in the 24th, after Dion Drena Beljo had given Dinamo the lead.
Other Dutch sources pointed to the poor weather and pitch conditions during the derby. Heavy rain started as early as the 10th minute, leading to water pooling on the surface and hampered ball movement. Nevertheless, referee Igor Pajač decided to continue the match. These conditions are an additional factor Ajax must consider when preparing for the trip to Split.
The victory over their main rivals gives Hajduk a significant psychological boost ahead of their European test. Ivan Leko's side enter the UEFA Conference League group stage with great confidence, bolstered by their leading position in the domestic league.
The next home challenge for the Whites comes on Sunday, October 18, against second-placed Varazdin. It will be a chance to maintain their lead at the top, and details of that match and the full schedule can be found on fixtures. Hajduk will aim to extend their run of four wins from their last five matches in all competitions.
