Šimun Hrgović is returning to Hajduk Split earlier than scheduled, providing a significant boost for the team ahead of Saturday's derby against Dinamo Zagreb. Croatia U-21 coach Ivica Olić agreed to an early release for the left-back and Branimir Mlačić to give them more time to prepare for important club fixtures.
Hrgović played the full 90 minutes for Croatia U-21 in their 3:1 win over Hungary, completing his role in the qualification campaign. The young Vatreni had already secured their place at the 2027 European Championship in Albania and Serbia two rounds early, remaining unbeaten in six matches. "In these last two qualification matches I will give a chance to all players," Olić said, explaining the decision.
Had he stayed with the national team, Hrgović would have played qualifiers against Ukraine and Lithuania just days before the derby. Now he will have a full week to work with the coach and squad. For Hajduk, this is excellent news as the 22-year-old defender has been a key player this season. He has made 15 appearances in all competitions, starting 14 of them, and scored one goal with three assists. In the HNL, he started seven out of eight rounds, and in Europe he played in all seven of Hajduk's matches.
The team currently sits second in the SuperSport HNL with 16 points from eight games, just four points behind leaders Dinamo. Saturday's clash at Poljud is therefore of immense importance in the title race. Hajduk is coming off a defeat to Rijeka (3:0), but prior to that had secured four consecutive league wins.
While Hrgović returns, his Hajduk teammates Toni Silić, Luka Hodak and Marin Šotiček remain with the U-21 squad for the remaining qualifiers. Their place in the team will be taken by Noel Bodetić from Rijeka. Branimir Mlačić is returning to Watford.
For Hajduk, this marks the start of a demanding period. Five days after the derby with Dinamo, they travel to face Ajax in the Conference League. That is followed by a home match against Varaždin and a trip to Switzerland to face Thun. An overview of all upcoming commitments is available on the fixtures page.
Hrgović also played the full match in Hajduk's last three league games before the break, against Rudeš, Slaven Belupo and Rijeka. His fitness and form will be key in defence against the attack of the league-leading team.
